My name is Rachel and I am standing as your Conservative candidate for Cornwall Council in St Ives West and Towednack. I live in St Ives with my husband Luke and I have 4 daughters and a stepson.
My youngest daughter Coco died in 2017 at just 6 years old. Coco had Autism and for as long as I can remember I have been fighting on her behalf. Fighting for interventions, fighting for better provisions, fighting for an education, fighting for a better understanding, fighting for medical care, and finally still fighting for the truth about her avoidable death. I am standing up for the people of Cornwall so they never have to go through what we have. Everybody has a right to an education and gold-standard healthcare.
I believe in the power of community and helping those that are not always able to help themselves for whatever reason. Who are we to judge. We are a small community in St Ives and surrounding areas and we have been through such difficult and unprecedented times. Our community has pulled together to help each other with food pantries and local restaurants cooking thousands of meals for those that are struggling. Our local supermarkets and businesses have rallied together donating and delivering in the area. Let’s keep this up. So many have been isolated due to the pandemic and it’s heartbreaking. I have so many ideas to share and with your support, I can try to make a change. A Conservative County Councillor for St. Ives and Towednack supported by 6 Cornish Conservative MP’s and a new Conservative County Council all supported by a Conservative Government that will spend YOUR money appropriately and the way you would want it to be spent. So, please support me and vote for me on May 6th, 2021.
SEND and Healthcare
The main reason I am standing in the Cornwall Council elections is to improve the SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disability) provisions and the healthcare in Cornwall. In 2017 my daughter Coco died at just 6 years old. Coco had Autism. Prior to her death I had campaigned and fought for a change in the SEND system. Although I had changed the provision for Coco at that time, I want that provision to be accessible to every child and family that needs it. Her subsequent death highlights the lack of Learning Disability and Autism education in our hospital. That needs to change.
Community Support
I feel so passionately about community support. I have felt the benefit and I now feel able to give back to the kind people of St Ives and the surrounding areas. A recent documentary highlighted the poverty and struggles of people in our area. An area seen as affluent and prosperous. We have all been such difficult and unprecedented times and shown such community spirit. There is no reason that this can’t continue with all ages of our community coming together to support each other all of the time. I have a plan.
Play Parks and Public Spaces
We live in one of the most scenic and fabulous parts of the country and although that’s great for us, it also means we are jam-packed during the Summer and beyond. We need somewhere away from the crowds, for our children and their families to play and relax when the beaches are just too full. I know the new skate park development is going to be absolutely brilliant but if you don’t skate, scoot, or BMX then this proposed extra space would be so great for children, friends, parents, and grandparents. A fabulous open space with play and exercise equipment, seating in the open and sheltered, and lighting to ensure it’s a safe place to visit during the day but also in the evening.
